15 Great outlining features will make you more productive in all kinds of writing projects!
1.
Easy drag and drop outlining: Move around your outlining items (called Topics) by drag and drop. Easy drop marks help you precisely control where the topics are dropped. You can drag and drop multiple topics and even complete branches of topics. All this is made possible by a powerful outlining list that has been developed over many years.

The above short video demo shows how this feature works. You will find similar demos or screenshots against each of the features described below.
2.
Easy Promote and demote: Use the Promote and demote buttons to change the level of selected sibling topics within the tree.
Although, drag and drop above can also promote and demote, we have easy buttons for this purpose too. Just select the sibling topics and click on the Indent-Right (demote) button to make them children of the preceding topic. Promote or Indent-Left works in a similar fashion.

Intuitive add, insert operations: Adding new topics to develop the outline is easy. You can insert topics anywhere by pressing an Insert key or add a new child to an existing topic by clicking the appropriate button. If you make a mistake, renaming or changing the levels is also simple by the intuitive drag and drop, promote/demote features already described above.

Paste content in a variety of ways: Pasting content from other applications is easy too. Just click on a paste and a new topic is pasted and its title is automatically made up from the first line of the content. There is an option to paste the Web Location of the content too when you copy and paste from Internet Explorer.
Automatic pasting is supported too where you simply go on copying content and WhizFolders goes on adding one topic for each in the background.

Color topic titles for any purpose, for example, to give relative importance to them. Another use can be to mark them with custom status, for example, all red topics are important, yellow topics are to be developed further, cyan topics are to be deleted later, and so on.
You can switch on the check mark support for the list on the File Options--Appearance page. This converts your outline in a task list so that you can keep track of the work done on the details of the items.
Also, an auto numbering feature can turn the list into a numbered outlining list so that it attaches a content number to each topic similar to table of contents.
You can switch on the auto numbering for the outline list on the File Options--Appearance page. The items in the list are automatically numbered. The numbering is automatically maintained even when you rearrange the items.
8.
Fast loading of documents: Even huge documents containing thousands of outlined topics are easy to manage with WhizFolders. This is made possible by the two pane approach where the outlined list is opened very fast, and you see the content of a topic only when necessary.

Powerful Rich Text content viewer and editor: In the right pane, you get a powerful rich text viewer and editor. The viewer supports showing special hyperlinks in the content of your topics. The editor uses
Microsoft RichEdit
Shouldn't you be able to exchange rich text easily with other RTF editors like Microsoft Word?
Yes, you certainly need that facility. After all, we all like to use several tools when using Windows. Different tools do different jobs well.
Here comes the good part. WhizFolders uses Microsoft RichEdit control. The idea is that we want you to easily exchange RTF text with Microsoft Word, Wordpad and other RTF editors.
Export or Copy/Paste complete or partial outlines in RTF format for use in your Word Processor. Export to Word Outline format or HTML is also supported with certain limitations.
Others can read your notes with a reader software, WhizFolder Viewer, that you can distribute with your notes. You can even make a self-running e-book containing a WhizFolder document.
Going one step beyond the freeware viewer, you can even convert a WhizFolder document into a self-running e-book that we call EWhizBook. The picture shows such an EWhizBook I made.
12.
Hoisting: Deluxe Edition also allows you to "hoist" a part of the outline so that you can concentrate on a branch of the outline to develop it further. We have improved it a lot in the recent Deluxe Edition Alpha release available from self-service area for paid users.
Hoisting means concentrating on only one branch of the outline and hiding the rest.
Here is how it works. You select the top level topic that you want to hoist. Then click on the menu View--Hoist as shown in the top picture.
As soon as you do that, all other topics are hidden as shown in the picture below it. Now you can work on the outline of only the topic that you selected. Afterwards, you click on View–-Unhide All to restore the full list of topics.
Hoisting is further improved in the latest version: In the new version, you can select a topic at any level and say "hoist all its children." This works much better than the feature in the current version where you must select the top level topic only.
13.
Boolean Search: You can find a set of topics easly by doing a boolean search for words with AND, OR, NEAR.
There are regular Find Text, Replace Text operations on the Search menu of a document. But, that's not what I want to show here.
In WhizFolders, you can also search all the notes in a document for many words just like in an Internet search engine. You can even specify complex conditions by separating the words with "and," "or," and "near." In this case, it will find notes containing all the given words (an "and"), one of the given words (an "or") or words quite close to each other (a "near").
This is called Advanced Search and can be peformed on a Search pane that opens from the right side as shown in the picture. The search gives a list of all the hits as shown. Moving the mouse over a hit shows the surrounding text in a balloon.
The main window of WhizFolders also allows this kind of search to be performed in all the listed WhizFolder documents.
14.
Keyword Tags: Deluxe edition allows you to Assign Keywords to topics to find them easily by keyword tags.
Assigning keyword tags to topics (available in the Deluxe Edition Only)
Sometimes, a topic may not actually contain the word that you want to associate with it.
For example, a topic may be related to “OLE Objects” but doesn’t have the actual words “OLE Objects” in it. So you can assign the custom keyword “OLE Objects” to all such topics by selecting them and right-clicking on the Assign Keywords operation.
A Keywords pane on the right shows all the keywords in this document. Click on the "Ole Objects" keyword and then click on Display. A list of topics associated with that keyword comes up from where you can display any of those topics.
15.
Powerful Hyperlinks to connect your topics: Insert hyperlinks going to other related topics in the content of a topic. Gives you unlimited possibilities to make your documents much more useful. You can even generate Universal Links that you can put in any other application (like MS Word) that supports links so that you open a particular WhizFolder document, positioned on a topic by clicking on the universal link in that other application. This completes the picture. You have links going in both directions, from WhizFolders to other application's documents or from other applications back to WhizFolders.
Make your own bookmark and favorites utilities: You can even have hyperlinks going from the outlining list directly. So you can turn your outlining list in a kind of Bookmark Utility, Favorites list or a master index of all your documents. Even importing the Favorites from Internet Explorer is supported.
You can insert a link in a note that goes to another related note. Such links help you later when you go to review these notes.
The top picture shows such a link to a note called "My note." It works just like the links in your Internet browser. But, in this case, you yourself can make up such links easily.
Such hyperlinks to other notes can be easily inserted by dragging a title from the note list on to a note editor. Or, you can even copy/paste a link from the list.
An Insert Wizard is also provided as shown in the second picture. There are numerous ways to enter links in WhizFolders. For more details, please see the actual right-click menus and the help file.
When you type a web address in the note editor, it automatically becomes a link as shown in the top picture.
By using the insert wizard shown earlier, you can even insert links in the editor that open files and folders. The files are opened in their respective programs, for example, an excel file link will open the spreadsheet in Excel. What is the advantage? You can have notes along with the links to help you.
The note list can have links too. The second picture shows some links inserted in the topic list that can open the respective folders, files or web sites.
BONUS FEATURES: You get these additional features on top of the above outlining features:
Spelling Checker and Thesaurus
Password protection (in paid version)
Flexible settings--vertical panes, multiple windows, desktop restore and more
In the Deluxe Edition, you can make templates of the text that you often want to insert. Even rich text templates are supported with fields.
For more details, please see the features, demos and the Blog on whizfolders.com.
